Jan Vogelpoel

Ceramicist Jan Vogelpoel merges midcentury design aesthetics with modern minimalism, characterised by a raw finish reminiscent of rugged sandstone cliffs and ancient artefacts. “When I hold the clay and feel it in my hands, there is a connection to the energy of the past and present,” she says.

A selection of Jan’s custom-designed clay sculptures and vases have found a permanent home at Trenery Brighton, our inaugural concept store, blending natural beauty with environmentally conscious design.

“I’m excited to bring my beautiful, organic shapes into the quite minimalist, clean environment [of the store],” she says.

At her sunlit home studio, Jan shares a firsthand demonstration of her technique and the intricacies of her creative process, from capturing that first spark of an idea to skillfully hand-crafting it into solid, tangible form.

Born in the UK and raised in South Africa, Jan has been creating with clay for more than 20 years. Following a career in graphic design, interior styling and art direction, she began clay sculpting full-time in her Melbourne studio in 2019. Jan has been shortlisted for the Victorian Craft Awards (2019), The Design Files + Laminex Design Awards (2021), and the Omnia Art Prize (2023), with her pieces now widely collected in Australia and internationally.

“The drawing is that initial, beautiful idea. I’ll often sit and sketch the same thing over and over, because I’m dreaming of how I would build it while I’m drawing.”

We commissioned Jan to create sculpture work for Trenery’s inaugural concept store in Brighton, Melbourne.
